On Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari urged the Senate to confirm Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as Nigeria’s actual Chief Justice (CJN). On the resumption of plenary, Senate President Ahmad Lawan read President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter of request.

On June 27, Justice Ariwoola took over as acting Chief Justice after Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad resigned due to illness. Prior to his resignation, 14 Supreme Court Justices petitioned Justice Tanko Muhammad, alleging poor welfare and outright mismanagement of the Supreme Court’s funds.

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters is investigating the former Chief Justice of Nigeria to determine whether or not the allegations in the petition are true.

Buhari also named four non-executive directors to the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The Senate is expected to review and confirm the nominees for appointment as CBN Non-Executive Directors.

Among those nominated are Professors Mike Idihi Obadan (South South Zone), Odinakachukwu Oniabuko (South East), Jalingo Mohammed (North East), and Adeola Adetunji (South West).
