The New Nigeria Peoples Party’s Board of Trustees has taken significant disciplinary actions following allegations of anti-party activities. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s candidate in the February 25 presidential election, has been suspended, as has the National Working Committee of the party.

New interim national officers, led by Dr. Agbo Major as acting National Chairman and Mr. Ogini Olaposi as acting National Secretary, have been appointed along with 18 others. This suspension, lasting six months, comes after party members at the special general assembly, held at Rockview Hotels in Apapa, voted on the matter.

Notably, the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, and the National Publicity Secretary, Major, were suspended by the NWC on August 24. Secretary of the BoT, Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi, stated during a press conference in Lagos that Kwankwaso had engaged in unauthorized interactions with various political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party. Abdullahi also emphasized that Kwankwaso’s suspension entailed losing his national leader status within the NNPP.

The BoT secretary further outlined the breach of the party’s constitution through the suspension of Aniebonam and the violation of pre-election Memorandum of Understanding. Dr. Chief Tope Aluko was elected as the new BoT Chairman, with Abdulahi as the new BoT Secretary, and High Chief Tony Obioha as the BoT spokesperson.

Amidst this turmoil, the newly appointed acting chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, pledged to mend divisions created by the suspended NWC members. He affirmed the party’s commitment to its people-oriented ideology and extended an invitation for members displaced for various reasons to rejoin the party’s ranks.

The special general assembly, attended by the new NWC and members from across the country, marked a significant point in this unfolding political saga.
