In a heartbreaking incident, Police Constable Wale Akinlotan, stationed at the Ilupeju police division in Lagos, collapsed and passed away while on duty. Akinlotan, who joined the Nigeria Police Force in 2018 and had previously worked at the Lagos Police Public Relations Office, was serving as the orderly to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the time of his demise.
The young graduate of Mass Communication from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic reportedly slumped on Monday while on duty, having recently recovered from injuries sustained during an altercation with a suspect.
Akinlotan had bravely assisted in capturing the suspect, who had bitten him severely during the incident. The officer shared videos of his injuries on Tiktok, highlighting the hazards of the job.
Despite the efforts made to save him, Akinlotan succumbed to the unknown cause of his collapse. He was laid to rest at a cemetery in Lagos State.
The news of his sudden death has triggered reactions among fellow police officers, who voiced their concerns about the poor welfare conditions they face on the job.
Several officers expressed their grievances, citing the lack of rest and adequate healthcare support. They lamented the absence of concern for their well-being, with no provisions for sick leave or annual vacations.
This unfortunate incident has once again shed light on the challenges faced by police personnel nationwide, emphasizing the urgent need for improved welfare measures within the force.
