World governing body, FIFA has placed an indefinite ban on MKO Stadium, Abuja from hosting international matches.
This follows the crowd riot that occurred at the stadium following Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the 2022 World Cup to be hosted by Qatar.
Nigeria News House reports that the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to qualify for the Mundial after losing on away goals to Ghana.
Although the match ended 1-1 in Abuja Tuesday and 1-1 on aggregate, the away goal by Ghana secured the World Cup ticket for the Black Stars.
After the final whistle, angry Nigerian fans stormed the pitch, vandalized billboards, chairs and dugout. They also chased Nigeria and Ghana players out of the tunnel with players and officials scampering for their safety. Security personnel had to deploy teargas to chase the rampaging ground.
Also, a doping officer on duty at the match died from a suspected cardiac arrest after the game’s full time, contrary to rumours on social media he was beaten to death by irate fans.
Attempts to resuscitate Joseph Kabungo failed, and the Zambian official was pronounced dead after arriving at a hospital in Abuja, according to the Nigeria Football Association (NFF).
