Unknown gunmen have raised down the local council secretariat in Nnewi South Local Government Area in Ukpor, Anambra State.

Nigeria News House gathered that the gunmen also killed one of the security guards attached to the secretariat leading to tension in the community.

Anambra Police Command spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu, who confirmed the incident, said he had not ascertained the number of casualties yet.

Ikenga said operatives had been deployed to the area while men of the State Fire Service were already on the ground to put out the fire.

Tochukwu, who described the incident as an arson attack, said the state police commissioner had visited the scene to assess the situation.

This is coming days after suspected gunmen killed a police sergeant on duty before reportedly setting the  Umuguma police headquarters in Imo State on fire.

Nigeria News House (NNH) reports that South-Eastern states have experienced wanton destruction of lives and properties including the setting ablaze of police stations and other public institutions. The attacks are blamed on gunmen who are said to be unknown.
