The House of Representatives has called for security presence in schools across the country to address worsening insecurity.

This follows the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved at Wednesday’s plenary by Billy Osawaru.

In his presentation, Osawaru lamented that students, particularly in places like Borno, Nasarawa, Niger, Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna States, are no longer safe.

He recalled that prior to Thursday, March 7, 2024, when about 287 schoolchildren were kidnapped from a government-owned school in Kaduna State, about 24 students at the Federal University of Gusau, Zamfara State, were kidnapped by bandits on September 22, 2023.

Osawaru warned that schools may be shut down if these attacks continued.

The lawmaker called on the Nigeria police to deliberately work towards providing security at schools due to the level of attacks frequently experienced at these learning institutions.

He stressed that bandits and kidnappers will be checked with the presence of security agencies at schools.
