The Rivers State Police Command has raised the alarm over a planned protest by the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), warning that the demonstration may be hijacked by hoodlums and lead to a breakdown of law and order.

The police have therefore advised NULGE to suspend its planned strike, citing credible intelligence that the protest will be infiltrated by hoodlums seeking to cause disruption and mayhem in the state.

The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has also alleged a plot by former Local Government chairmen and lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to carry out a protest.

According to ALGON, the planned protest is a sinister plot to cause anarchy and chaos in the state, and create an excuse for a state of emergency to be declared by President Tinubu.

The police have vowed to take all necessary lawful measures to protect the lives and properties of residents in Rivers State, and have deployed officers to the secretariats of all 23 local government areas in the state.

The officers will remain in their respective locations until the threat of disruption of peace is deemed to have ceased.

This development comes as the state government and security agencies are on high alert over potential security threats in the state.

The police have warned that any attempt to disrupt the peace will be met with swift and decisive action.
