Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on traditional rulers in the state to play an active role in maintaining stability and fostering economic progress. Speaking at the 117th/118th Combined Quarterly General Meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers in Port Harcourt, Fubara emphasized the importance of community involvement in curbing economic sabotage and ensuring security.

Governor Fubara urged traditional rulers to take charge of their communities and work against illegal activities such as bunkering and pipeline vandalism, which he described as detrimental to the nation’s oil production—a crucial element of Nigeria’s economy. He stated, “We need our country to progress. We need our country to be stable. We need our country to grow economically. It is through only one means: our oil production.”

Despite the ongoing security challenges, including recent abductions of market leaders, Fubara assured support for the traditional rulers, promising potential government assistance for establishing local vigilance groups if necessary. He also expressed gratitude for the continued existence of the council amid political turbulence and highlighted the importance of leadership in navigating the current challenges.

Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers and Paramount Ruler of Apara Kingdom, commended Governor Fubara for his efforts in maintaining peace despite political unrest. He cautioned against responding to violence with violence and urged all political factions to prioritize the stability of Rivers State over personal interests.

Rivers State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Engr. Charles Amadi, highlighted the need for traditional rulers to address the social and communal issues affecting their areas. He acknowledged the valuable contributions of those traditional rulers who have effectively managed their communities and called for a concerted effort to improve living conditions and community development.

The meeting underscored the collaborative effort needed between the state government and traditional institutions to enhance peace and stability in Rivers State.
