Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed his deep sorrow over the death of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
Taking to his X handle on Friday, the former Anambra governor described Iwuanyanwu’s passing as shocking and heartbreaking. He highlighted the elder statesman’s legacy as a bridge builder and a devoted advocate for Nigeria’s unity and progress.
“I am greatly disheartened by the death of an elder statesman and President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. The devastating reports of his death have left all who knew him heartbroken. He was not just a father to many, but a bridge builder who remained committed to the peaceful coexistence of the nation,” Obi stated.
Obi emphasized Iwuanyanwu’s patriotism and his relentless pursuit of justice, equity, and development beyond tribal lines. He also recounted personal interactions with Iwuanyanwu, noting the invaluable advice he received from the respected leader.
“He was one of those revered father figures who had always given me useful advice. He promised me that he would soon be alright to continue with his contributions to the progress of the nation. I continued to pray for his quick and full recovery,” Obi shared.
In his heartfelt message, Obi extended his condolences to Iwuanyanwu’s family, the Ohaneze Ndigbo community, and the entire nation. He prayed for the strength to bear this great loss and for Iwuanyanwu’s soul to rest in peace.
