The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has outlined a five-point agenda aimed at fostering peace and development in Nigeria. The group, led by Director of Media and Publicity, Prof. Obasi Igwe, and Coordinator General, His Lordship Alpha Justice, emphasized the need for restructuring and the immediate, unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
UNIEC called for an end to terrorism and the economic blockades against Eastern Nigeria, advocating for the reopening of ports and the restoration of the Eastern pole of development, which historically connected the coastal South with the riparian North. They argue that these measures are essential for ensuring peace and advancing economic growth across the country.
The group also highlighted the need to resolve the ongoing farmers-herders clashes and to put an end to the violence that has plagued various regions of Nigeria in recent years. UNIEC stressed that restructuring, regionalism, and a referendum are key to achieving long-term stability in Nigeria.
In their statement, the elders urged President Bola Tinubu to break from the policies of his predecessor and address the issues that have caused division and unrest, particularly in the Eastern region. They called for the release of all political prisoners and an end to extrajudicial actions, emphasizing that such steps would help heal the nation’s wounds and create a more united Nigeria.
