For the first time in 16 years, Nigeria is scheduled to hold a national census between March and April 2023.

Director-General of National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa-Kwarra, disclosed this to State House Correspondents after a meeting of the Council of State presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, April 14.

Isa-Kwarra also said the NPC would be conducting a pilot census from June 2022 after political parties must have concluded their pre-general elections activities.

The NPC boss, who recalled the last census exercise held in 2006, disclosed that the commission will deploy high technology for the exercise.

The meeting was chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari and was attended by former Heads of State โ€“ Abdusalami Abubakar, Goodluck Jonathan, and Yakubu Gowon.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha, National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno and the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari were also in attendance.

State Governors โ€“ Hope Uzodinma of Imo State; Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, and Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state among others โ€“ took part in the deliberations.
