The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery to permit independent marketers to lift fuel from the newly established refinery. This resolution followed a motion by Oboku Oforji, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency, during a plenary session in Abuja.

Oforji expressed concerns that only major marketers currently have access to lift products from the refinery, creating a monopoly that could force independent marketers to resort to fuel imports to sustain their businesses. He highlighted that this situation could exacerbate fuel scarcity and its economic implications for Nigerians.

Commending the Dangote Group for initiating petroleum refining, Oforji noted that this step could lead Nigeria towards energy self-sufficiency, drive down costs, and enhance foreign investment. He criticized the NNPCL’s historical management of crude and refineries, arguing that excluding independent marketers from lifting fuel undermines competition and accountability in the sector.

To address these concerns, the House also urged Dangote Refinery to develop or partner with stakeholders to establish tank farms or depots across Nigeria to improve fuel availability. Additionally, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas has formed a joint committee with the Senate, chaired by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, to investigate ongoing issues within the petroleum sector and propose solutions.
