Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has emphasized the need for collective action among West African nations to address the region’s mounting security challenges.

Speaking at the Gala Night for the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja, Matawalle praised the commitment of ECOWAS military chiefs to fostering peace, unity, and regional development despite ongoing threats.

“Over the years, our region has faced evolving security challenges, from terrorism and insurgency to maritime insecurity and transnational crime,” Matawalle said. “Yet, through our collective resolve and cooperation, we have made significant strides in tackling those threats.”

He highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening military collaboration, intelligence sharing, and capacity building, stressing that no single nation could tackle these challenges alone.

“Tonight’s gathering is a testament to the enduring spirit of partnership that binds us together. Let us renew our determination to uphold the values of professionalism, resilience, and unity in our collective defence effort,” he added.

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, described the meeting as a pivotal step toward enhancing regional security and cooperation within ECOWAS. He urged defence chiefs to turn their deliberations into concrete actions that will strengthen peace and stability across the region.
