Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has come to the defence of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, vowing to protect the 18-year-old following public criticism over his recent form and pre-Clasico remarks.
Yamal faced a media backlash after suggesting that Real Madrid “steal and complain” ahead of last weekend’s Clasico, where he also endured a subdued performance in Barcelona’s defeat — a result that left the Catalans five points adrift of La Liga leaders Madrid.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Flick said he maintains an open and honest relationship with the young winger.
“We speak with him… we are very honest together, he with me and I with him, and this is the best way,” the German coach said. “I will always protect him and support him. He’s a fantastic player, a fantastic guy — very young — and we will go on this way.”
Yamal has been managing a groin injury for several weeks and appeared below his usual sharpness in the high-profile match. Flick, however, offered a positive update on his fitness.
“Lamine is good. Of course, he has some days where he feels some pain, but now he really works hard and improves a lot. He’s on a good evolution,” he said.
Flick also confirmed that Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo have returned to training after injury, noting their presence has lifted the squad’s intensity.
“With Dani and Lewy back, the last two training sessions were very good. It’s not just that they increase the level and quality, but that the others — especially the young players — are also improving. Hopefully we can show it tomorrow,” he added.
Barcelona, still without Pedri, Gavi, and Joan Garcia, host Elche at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday. The promoted side, managed by former Barca assistant Eder Sarabia, have impressed this season with only two defeats and what Flick described as “fantastic football.”
