International Anti-Corruption Day 2025
Theme: “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity”
Dateline: Abuja, 9 December 2025

The international community today observes International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD), commemorated every 9 December to reaffirm global commitment to the prevention, detection, and elimination of corruption in all its forms.

This year’s theme — “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity” — focuses on the rising influence of young people in shaping more transparent, accountable, and future-driven governance systems.

Across Africa, lawmakers, institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners are marking the day with renewed calls for strengthened oversight, transparent budgeting, and deeper youth engagement in national accountability processes.

The African Parliamentarians’ Network Against Corruption (APNAC-Africa), under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Alban S. K. Bagbin, Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, has reiterated the continent’s commitment to reinforcing laws and parliamentary mechanisms that protect public resources.

In Nigeria, GOPAC Nigeria, the National Assembly, and a wide network of state and non-state actors continue to advance anti-corruption reforms through legislation, parliamentary oversight, and civic engagement.

Statement from His Excellency, The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, Chairman, GOPAC Nigeria

“As Nigeria joins the international community to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day 2025, I reaffirm, on behalf of GOPAC Nigeria and the National Assembly, our unwavering commitment to strengthening the fight against corruption in all sectors of national life.

This year’s theme — ‘Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity’ — is both timely and compelling. Our young people are not merely stakeholders; they are the principal architects of the Nigeria we aspire to build. Their voices, energy, and demand for good governance must guide our national renewal.

I therefore call on Nigerian youths, as well as state and non-state actors, including civil society, private sector institutions, faith-based groups, traditional authorities, and community-based organizations, to join hands in building a culture of integrity that is stronger than the structures of corruption.

The National Assembly will continue to strengthen legislation, enhance oversight, and provide the institutional backing required to deepen Nigeria’s compliance with global anti-corruption standards.

But laws alone are not enough. What Nigeria needs is a collective moral uprising — a decision by all citizens, especially the youth, to reject corrupt practices and embrace the values that sustain prosperous nations.

Together, let us build a future where transparency is rewarded, accountability is expected, and public trust is restored.”

— His Excellency,
Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON
President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria
Chairman, GOPAC Nigeria
