Turkey on Thursday said it is against any military operation targeting Iran, warning that the country’s internal problems should be resolved without foreign intervention.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made the position known while speaking with journalists in Istanbul, reacting to recent comments by US President Donald Trump about possible action to support Iranian protesters.

“We’re against a military operation against Iran. We believe the authentic problems of Iran should be resolved by themselves,” Fidan said.

Trump has repeatedly suggested that Washington could come to the aid of the Iranian people amid a violent crackdown on nationwide protests.

Fidan argued that Iran’s current unrest is being misinterpreted.

“Iran’s economic grievances were misunderstood as an uprising against the Islamic republic,” he said.

Rights groups say at least 3,428 people have been killed since protests erupted across Iran, with thousands taking to the streets against a government known for its low tolerance for dissent.

The demonstrations have unfolded amid a deep economic crisis worsened by years of international sanctions and the aftermath of the June war with Israel.

Fidan urged diplomacy rather than force, stressing that dialogue remains the best path forward.

“We absolutely want problems to be resolved through dialogue,” he said.

“Hopefully, the United States and Iran will resolve this issue among themselves — whether through mediators, other actors, or direct dialogue. We are closely following these developments.”
