Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has stated that he will not run for president in 2023 under any political party.
In a series of tweets on Friday, Emefiele thanked the farmers organization for their faith in him as the best man for the position ahead of the general elections, saying that if he is interested, he will buy the presidential forms with his own money and not rely on anyone or any group to do so for him.
On Friday, three parties spent N100 million to select All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates on behalf of the CBN governor.
Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Friends of Emefiele, and Emefiele Support Group all said that Emefiele was the sole responsible and responsive candidate for President Buhari’s successor in the 2023 general election.
“However, if I respond to their calls and decide to run for president, I will use my own hard-earned savings from over 35 years of banking leadership to buy my own Nomination Forms in an open and transparent manner, in full compliance with the laws and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, without the use of proxies.”
“And if I do not run for political office, I will continue to serve and sacrifice for the good people of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari’s capable leadership.” This is a significant decision that requires God’s divine intervention: “The Almighty will thus direct in the coming days,” he stated.
“I am humbled by the increased interest of those requesting me to run for President in the 2023 general elections: I have not made that decision,” Emefiele stated. I am grateful for the sacrifices made by those farmers and patriots who went so far as to raise personal finances and offer me Presidential Nomination Forms.
