The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has stated that a pricing increase has not been approved.
This was said by NERC Chairman Garba Sanusi addressed journalists in Abuja on Friday. He claims that allegations of a power tariff increase are false. He denied that the electricity tariff had increased, as reported in the media.
“I want to clarify unequivocally, on behalf of the NERC management, that we have not approved any rate review as of today (Friday), and there is no indication that any energy distribution firm is increasing its tariff,” he stated.
“We want proof if the rate at which you buy electricity has changed in the recent one to three weeks.”
He explained that the last tariff review, according to the NERC website, was in December 2021.
“Our role is to approve tariff proposals for distribution businesses, and we haven’t received any,” the NERC chairman stated.
His remark came after the agency published (on Thursday) a review of tariffs for six distribution businesses that would take effect in December 2021.
