Senator Godswill Akpabio, former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, was announced as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District on Thursday.

Senator Godswill Akpabio received 478 votes in the Senatorial Primaries held at the Skill Acquisition Centre in the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, defeating Retired DIG Udom Ekpo Udom, who received 3 votes, and Engineer Joseph Akpan, who received only one vote.

Earlier, the party’s state chairman, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, informed party delegates that the NWC of the party had ordered a fresh election as a result of the cancellation of the previous primaries, which were held on May 28, 2022, due to security violations by some hoodlums.

Four aspirants were billed to take part in the rescheduled election, namely; Senator Godswill Akpabio, former member House of Representatives, Hon Ekperikpe Ekpo, DIG Udom Ekpo Udom and Engineer Joseph Akpan.

Before the commencement of voting, former member House of Representatives, Hon Ekpo, announced his voluntary withdrawal from the race and urged all his delegates to cast their votes for Senator Akpabio, whom he described as his leader and mentor.

Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Ekperikpe Ekpo, DIG Udom Ekpo Udom, and Engineer Joseph Akpan were all scheduled to run in the rescheduled election.

Before voting began, Hon Ekpo, a former member of the House of Representatives, announced his voluntary withdrawal from the race and urged all of his delegates to vote for Senator Akpabio, whom he described as his leader and mentor.
