According to Global Forest Watch, Nigeria lost 1.14 million hectares of forest between 2001 and 2021, resulting in an 11% decrease in tree cover and 587 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Cutting down trees for logging, clearing land for farming, or meeting the energy needs of a growing population puts a strain on Nigeria’s natural forests.
