Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate, has explained why he accepted his nomination as the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Baba-Ahmed founded Baze University in Abuja. The 46-year-old was a former senator from Kaduna North Senatorial District.

From 2011 to 2012, he was Senator for Kaduna North, and from 2003 to 2007, he was a member of the House of Representatives.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Baba-Ahmed stated that his decision to accept the nomination was motivated by his desire to save Nigeria.

He also stated that Obi and other Labour Party stakeholders played a significant role in his decision because he believes in their agenda and movement to get Nigeria to where it should be.

“My task here today is simple, and it is to accept my nomination, but before I do so, I should provide the following justifications,” he said.

“The undeniable and unquestionable primary reason for running on this ticket is to save Nigeria.”

“It goes without saying that you can only save what is in trouble, and Nigeria is in trouble, and I cannot afford to be a part of the movement to save Nigeria.”

“The second reason is that I believe in Nigeria’s greatness.” I believe in peace and prosperity, and I believe in the unity of the Nigerian people.”

Baba-Ahmed said that Obi’s integrity and accomplishments in the private sector were some of the factors that also influenced his decision to join the ticket.

“Because of my background in the education industry, I immediately recognize a valuable idea when I hear one and refuse to let it pass. One example is the statement made by our presidential candidate that Nigeria’s crude oil is found in the fertile land in the north.

“Obi, how much more detribalized and nationalistic can you get? A comment like that gives me hope for a better future for Nigeria. He is a capable and honest person.

“This is a high point in my life and career. Having said this and with all trust in Almighty Allah and my belief in Nigeria and with all humility, I accept the generous nomination to be the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour party for the 2023 general election.

Also speaking, Obi, who apologised for the postponement of the event from Thursday to Friday, said the unveiling signals the party and his resolve in the journey to “take back Nigeria”.

“It is good to be here today after weeks and months that we have gone round, consulted and searched around to look for somebody who fits the bill of what we are trying to do.

“Today, I am proud to say I have been able to meet and secure somebody who is eminently qualified and fits the bill to be the Vice President of Nigeria.

“I know people will say you are not there yet, but I can tell you, I know where we are going,” Obi said.

Continuing, he said, “This is our right to secure, unite and make Nigeria productive. And you can’t do that without having people who have similar visions, ideas and are prepared for the task. So, I have the honour today to present to you, God willing, Nigeria’s next Vice President in the person of Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.
