THE opposition parties in the National Assembly’s Upper Chamber have given President Muhammadu Buhari a six-week deadline to address the country’s security issues or face impeachment.

They also threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President if he did not address the insecurity within the time frame set by lawmakers.

Senator Phillip Aduda, Minority Leader of the Senate, stated the lawmakers’ position on Wednesday while briefing reporters at the National Assembly in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Prior to the briefing, opposition lawmakers walked out in protest of a call to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari during Wednesday’s plenary.

Senator Aduda had raised a point of order, requesting that the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, discuss the country’s security situation and President Buhari’s impeachment.

However, Senator Lawan, who presided over the plenary, declined the minority leader’s request, stating that the point of order raised fell flat on its face.

Angered by the Senate President’s action, all lawmakers elected on the platforms of political parties other than the All Progressives Congress (APC) took turns walking out of the legislative chamber while the plenary was still in session.

The walkout was the latest in a series of concerns expressed by various individuals and groups amid the country’s growing sense of insecurity.
