Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion and record-holder for the most French Open titles with 14 wins, has withdrawn from the ATP Barcelona tournament, further dampening his preparations for a shot at his 15th French Open title.

Nadal, aged 36, cited his ongoing recovery from a hip flexor injury sustained during the Australian Open in January as the reason for his withdrawal, which also caused him to miss the Monte Carlo Open this week.

In a tweet, Nadal expressed his disappointment at not being fully fit and stated that he would continue his preparation process for his return to competition.

Barcelona holds a special significance for Nadal as it is his adopted club and playing at home is always a unique feeling for him.

Originally anticipating a two-month absence from the circuit, Nadal had skipped hard-court tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami with the aim of returning for the clay court season.

However, his fitness issues have persisted since winning his 14th French Open title last year.

Nadal even played through pain during his victory against Casper Ruud, with his left foot numbed to counter the discomfort caused by Müller-Weiss syndrome, a condition he has been dealing with since he was 18.

He later withdrew from his Wimbledon semi-final due to an abdominal injury.

As a result of his prolonged absence, Nadal has slipped out of the top 10 rankings for the first time since April 2005, currently sitting at 15th.

His fans and tennis enthusiasts around the world eagerly await his return to full fitness and competitive action.
