The godfather of artificial intelligence (AI), Geoffrey Hinton, has resigned from Google, warning about the dangers posed by the technology.
The British-Canadian cognitive psychologist and computer scientist has pioneered research on neural networks and deep learning, which has paved the way for current AI systems like ChatGPT.
Speaking to the BBC, he warned that AI chatbots could soon overtake the level of information held by a human brain.
Hinton also referred to “bad actors” who would try to use AI for “bad things”.
Hinton’s announcement comes after an open letter called for a pause on all developments more advanced than ChatGPT so robust safety measures could be designed and implemented.
