The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has voiced its opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration regarding the removal of subsidies on petroleum products by the federal government.

In response to Tinubu’s inaugural speech, the TUC criticized the move, stating that if it leads to price increases and unregulated exploitation of the people, it is an unacceptable development.

TUC President Festus Osifoh and General Secretary Nuhu Toro jointly issued a statement expressing their surprise and concern over the withdrawal of the subsidy.

While initially hopeful about Tinubu’s commitment to serving the people and engaging in dialogue on crucial national matters, the TUC was dismayed by his decision to end the petroleum subsidy.

The TUC emphasized the need for a cautious and explicit approach from the new administration to prevent conflicting interpretations between Tinubu’s statements, written documents, and the provisions in the 2023 appropriation act.

The TUC stressed that the issue of subsidy removal affects the livelihoods and survival of the working class, underscoring the necessity for extensive dialogue and consultation with representatives from various sectors, including professionals, market vendors, students, and the impoverished masses.

The TUC expects the matter to be resolved through peaceful discussions.

Furthermore, the TUC emphasized that Nigerian workers and the masses should not bear the brunt of the inefficiencies of successive governments.

It demanded that President Tinubu allow sufficient time for comprehensive dialogue, consultations, and stakeholder engagements, as he himself advocated in his speech.

The TUC believes that all the pertinent issues and concerns need to be amicably addressed and resolved.

Additionally, the TUC expressed concerns about President Tinubu’s failure to outline plans to tackle the deteriorating state of industrial relations, particularly in the education, health, and judiciary sectors.

The organization highlighted the adverse consequences of prolonged strikes and industrial actions on society and the economy, urging Tinubu to address these challenges effectively.
