In line with the rights granted to Nigerian citizens to enjoy their fundamental human rights, the law also unequivocally prohibits individuals from undermining the police institution or grossly violating its provisions concerning the use of uniforms.

Consequently, the recent skits posted on social media by comedian Abdulgafar Abiola, widely known as “Cute Abiola,” have drawn strong condemnation.

The sketches, uploaded on 20th and 24th July, 2023, depicted a highly disrespectful and derogatory portrayal of the police uniform, directly contravening Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law.

Such actions are not only offensive but also impugn the honor and dignity of the dedicated men and women who proudly wear the uniform while serving the nation.

Abdulgafar Abiola will now be subject to an investigation and possible prosecution, as the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) had previously issued warnings to skit makers and filmmakers, urging them to refrain from tarnishing the image of the uniform or its associated items.

The NPF remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving the sanctity of the uniform and will follow proper legal procedures to ensure accountability for any individual or entity seeking to denigrate it or the institution it represents.

The public, including media personalities, are called upon to exercise their freedom of expression responsibly and avoid actions that could undermine public trust in our esteemed law enforcement institutions.

By doing so, we can collectively contribute to upholding the integrity of our nation’s law enforcement and promoting a respectful and harmonious society.
