In a courageous mission by the Federal Government, 198 stranded Nigerians have been successfully evacuated from the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
The heartening rescue operation marks the 12th flight to bring back citizens, with a total of 2,556 Nigerians now safely repatriated.
The airlift, orchestrated by the Sudanese Airline, Tarco Air, culminated in the safe touchdown of the evacuees at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at approximately 12:09 pm.
Graciously received by the Migrant Affairs division of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, as well as the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Ahmed, the returning Nigerians expressed immense relief and gratitude.
Among the evacuees, 160 were adults, and 38 were minors, all rescued from the turmoil in Sudan.
Addressing the media at NAIA, Director General Mustapha Ahmed assured the public that the government remains resolute in its commitment to bringing back all stranded Nigerians, undeterred by the challenging conditions in Sudan.
Despite the escalating crisis in Sudan, Ahmed confirmed that no Nigerian lives were lost during the evacuation process.
He acknowledged the tireless efforts of the Sudanese airline, TARCO, and their collaboration with the military authorities to facilitate the airlift.
“We are resolute in our mission to ensure the safe return of our citizens,” Ahmed stated.
He also revealed that the evacuation efforts would persist, with around 40 more Nigerians awaiting repatriation.
In an act of kindness, the Dangote Foundation extended financial aid, providing 100,000 naira to each evacuee to facilitate their transportation to their respective destinations within Nigeria.
Mrs. Catherine Udida, Director of Migrant Affairs at the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, emphasized the government’s commitment to providing comprehensive support for the evacuees.
The focus is on ensuring their physical and psychological well-being as they reintegrate into society.
The returnees expressed their gratitude to both the past and present administrations for their dedication to securing their lives and executing the evacuation mission successfully.
They commended the Federal Government, NEMA, and the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan for their invaluable efforts in bringing them back home safely.
This heartwarming repatriation showcases the unwavering determination of the Nigerian government to safeguard its citizens in times of crisis and demonstrates the strength of international cooperation in times of need.
