Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani of Adamawa Central in the National Assembly has been declared the winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship primaries held on Thursday.
Aishatu, the party’s sole female candidate, defeated other notable APC figures such as the current Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Army, Honourable Abdulrazak Sa’ad Namdas, former EFCC boss Nuhu Ribadu, and former governor Umar Jibrilla Bindow.
Following the completion of vote counting, Binani was declared the winner of the hotly contested primary on Friday morning in Yola, the state capital.
Binani, the only female governorship aspirant, received 440 votes, according to Adamawa State Chairman of APC, Ibrahim Bilal, and was declared the winner by the state party Chairman, defeating five other male aspirants to clinch the hotly contested Governorship ticket.
Binani defeated Wafarniyi Theman, Mustapha Umar, Jibrilla Bindow, Senator Abdulrazak Namdas, Otumba, and Nuhu Ribadu, who each received 21, 103, 94, 39, and 288 votes.
The Adamawa Central Senator denied stepping down weeks ago. The lawmaker made the clarification while speaking to party delegates and stakeholders in Ganye, Jada, Toungo, and Mayo-Belwa local governments during a recent visit to the areas.
Following the development, Senator Aishatu Binani will face off against the state’s incumbent Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, who also recently emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate to run for re-election in 2023.
If she eventually defeats the Governor in the general gubernatorial polls, Senator Aishatu “Gimbiyar Adamawa” as she is popularly called will become the first elected female Governor in the History of the country.
