Anthony Albanese was sworn in as Australia’s 31st prime minister on Monday in a brief ceremony in Canberra, promising swift action on climate change, greater gender equality, and higher wage growth.
Albanese was sworn in quickly as Australia’s next leader, as the prime minister is scheduled to fly to Japan on Monday for a meeting of the Quad security partnership in Tokyo.
In Tokyo, the new Prime Minister will meet with some of Australia’s most important security and economic partners, including US President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Albanese defeated former Prime Minister Scott Morrison in an election held on Saturday, in which several senior ministers in Morrison’s government, including Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, lost their seats. A large number of new lawmakers from minor parties and independent lawmakers who support climate change action were among the 2022 election winners.
