A devastating scene unfolded at Delhi international airport, India on Friday as a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt collapsed during heavy rains, leaving several people injured.

Videos shared online showed vehicles crushed under giant girders at the departure forecourt of Terminal 1, with emergency personnel rushing to provide aid to those affected.

The airport authorities confirmed the incident in a statement, that “due to heavy rains since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of Delhi’s Airport Terminal 1 collapsed around 5am.”

The statement further added that “there are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected.”

As a result of the incident, all departures from Terminal 1 have been temporarily suspended, and check-in counters are closed as a safety measure.
