China has called on the United States to immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro following a US strike on Caracas that led to his capture.
In a statement on Sunday, China’s foreign ministry urged Washington to ensure the safety of Maduro and his wife and to stop what it described as attempts to topple Venezuela’s government.
“China calls on the US to ensure the personal safety of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, release them at once, and stop toppling the government of Venezuela,” the ministry said.
Beijing described the US operation as a “clear violation of international law.”
