The case of former Brazil international footballer Dani Alves, convicted of rape in Spain in February, has taken a new turn with his release from jail pending appeal after paying a bail of one million euros.

Despite being sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail for the crime, Alves’ provisional release has sparked controversy, with public prosecutors and the victim’s lawyer appealing the decision.

The victim, who testified behind a screen during the trial, described being violently forced to have carnal knowledge by Alves, while his defense argued there was “sexual tension” between them.
