The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has appealed to the organised labour to be considerate and patriotic in their demands in the ongoing negotiation for a new national minimum wage.

Onyejeocha in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja said the federal government had been consistent in taking steps to secure a fair and realistic wage for Nigerian workers.

She is urging the organised labour to recognise that the country’s economy was still on the path of recovery from the effect of the pandemic and other economic distress.

The minister, who said the government recognised that the economic challenges faced by Nigerians were complex and multifaceted, called for collective effort of all stakeholders to overcome them, noting that the increase was a demonstration of government’s willingness to work towards a mutually beneficial agreement.

During the Tripartite Committee on the Minimum Wage negotiation meeting on Tuesday, the Federal Government had offered the labour unions 60,000 naira as the new minimum wage for workers, while the Organised Labour had also proposed N494, 000
