The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, has been plagued by a revolving door of coaches in recent years.
Finidi George’s resignation as head coach marks the latest in a string of brief tenures.
Recent Coaching History in Nigeria are
Gernot Rohr (2016-2021): 5 years
Austin Eguavoen (2021-2022): 5 months
Jose Peseiro (2022-2022): 6 months
Finidi George (2023-2023): 1 month
Each of these coaches faced significant challenges, including conflicts with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), poor performances, and disputes with players.
Finidi George, a former Nigerian international player, was appointed head coach in April 2024. Despite his impressive playing career, George struggled to replicate that success as a coach. The team’s dismal start to the World Cup qualifiers, with only one point from two matches, ultimately led to his resignation.
The NFF is now tasked with finding a suitable replacement for George. As the Super Eagles prepare for upcoming matches, the pressure is on to appoint a coach who can stabilize the team and lead them to success.
