Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died in London following a prolonged illness. He was 81.
The death was confirmed in an official statement released by family spokesperson Mallam Garba Shehu, who disclosed that Buhari passed away at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, in a London clinic.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Shehu stated.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari was the 23rd child in a Fulani family. A career military officer, he rose to national prominence when he led Nigeria as military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later returned as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023, becoming one of the few Nigerians to rule the country in both capacities.
During his presidency, Buhari was widely known for his anti-corruption campaigns, controversial economic policies, and efforts to restore security across Nigeria’s troubled regions. His administration was also marked by major infrastructure projects and a foreign policy tilt toward Africa-focused diplomacy.
Reacting to his death, President Bola Tinubu expressed deep condolences to the family and the nation. In a statement signed by his adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said he had spoken to Buhari’s widow, Mrs. Aishat Buhari, and assured her of the nation’s solidarity in mourning.
President Tinubu also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria for burial. Flags across the country have been ordered to fly at half-staff in honour of the late statesman.
Buhari’s burial will be conducted in accordance with Islamic rites, with further details expected from the family.
Tributes have poured in from across the country and beyond, with the Northern Governors’ Forum, political allies, and international leaders reflecting on Buhari’s legacy, leadership, and complex role in Nigeria’s modern history.
