Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, has arrived in Nigeria for a two-day official visit.

He next traveled to Borno, a state plagued by a decade-long insurgency as Nigeria attempts to eradicate terrorists.

Guterres is expected to meet with Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum in Maiduguri, the state capital, before embarking on a field mission to meet families affected by the Boko Haram conflict, which has ravaged the region for over 12 years, according to the United Nations Information Center in Nigeria.

The UN Secretary-General will also review the impact of climate change on vulnerable populations, as well as the COVID-19 recovery’s progress and difficulties.

He will next travel to Abuja to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, and other senior government officials.

Guterres will meet with young people’s delegates, women, religious leaders, diplomatic communities, and journalists in Abuja after officiating a wreath-laying ceremony for victims of the 2011 U.N. house bombing.

It is the UN Secretary-first General’s trip to Nigeria since his appointment. The trip is part of his regular Ramadan solidarity tours to different countries.
