The number of suspected cholera cases in Lagos State has risen to 401, resulting in 21 fatalities.

This was revealed by Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health.

The highest numbers of cases were reported in Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa as announced in a statement signed by Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, the Director of Public Affairs at the state Ministry of Health, on Thursday.

Cholera is a water and foodborne disease caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, which is contracted through contaminated water and food. It can lead to severe acute watery diarrhea and the severe forms of the disease can be fatal within hours if not treated.

Following the last update on the cholera outbreak in Lagos, which reported 350 suspected cases and 15 fatalities, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, disclosed that the total number of cholera cases has increased to 401 across Lagos, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa recording the highest numbers.

She added that the death toll has also risen to 21, an increase of six from the previously reported 15 fatalities.

According to Ogunyemi, the rise in cases was anticipated following the Ileya festivities, during which large gatherings occurred.
