There appears to be a brewing crisis at the Nigerian Bar Association’s National Secretariat, just weeks before the tenure of the NBA’s Executive Committee, led by President Olumide Akpata.
The conflict arose when the Association’s General Secretary, Madam Joyce Oduah, issued a notice on the 27th of July 2022 informing members of a proposed amendment to the NBA Constitution to be discussed and passed at the Association’s Annual General Meeting on the 25th of August 2022.
Hours later, on July 28th, 2022, the Assistant General Secretary, Uchenna Nwadialo, in a rare act, issued a different Notice than the one previously shared by her boss in office, with entirely different proposed constitutional amendments that were even more bogus than the earlier one.
While the crisis is being handled internally by the NBA Leadership to avoid embarrassment to the Association, the issues in contention are the failure of the Amendment Committee to transmit the proposed amendment timously to the NBA Secretariat and the smuggling of many contentious provisions to the ones agreed by NEC, including a provision relating to the qualification of the Bar Council Members and a provision making the application of the proposed amendment mandatory.
