Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has expressed worry over the gradual disappearance of the meritocratic tradition that existed in government recruitment processes in the past.

Owasanoye made this known while delivering the opening remark at a National Policy Dialogue on Entrenching Transparency in Public Service Recruitment in Nigeria organized by the commission on Tuesday.

He stated that the lack of transparency in public sector recruitments has become a subject of great concern that requires urgent attention from all stakeholders.

The ICPC boss listed lack of proper scrutiny, favouritism, systemic corruption and laxity in the public service recruitment process as the driving force that militates against transparency in the government recruitment process.

The dialogue organized by the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), the research and training arm of the ICPC had in attendance representative of the Senate President, Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf;  Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, Head of Service of the Federation; Dr Tukur Bello Igawa, Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission; Musiliu Smith, Chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC) among others.
