The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has condemned the recent outbreak of violence in Rivers State which led to the deaths of a Police officer, Inspector David Mgbada, and a vigilante operative, Samuel Nwigwe.

They were killed on Tuesday when supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and those of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, clashed over the tenure of the 23 Local Government chairmen in Rivers State.

Reacting to the development, the IGP, in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, directed the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, to tighten security across the state especially around the local government headquarters.

IGP Egbetokun also ordered a thorough investigation into the killing of the police officer and the vigilante operative, as well as the general violence that erupted in the state.

He directed the deployment of operatives of the Force Intelligence Response Team to assist the Rivers State Command in arresting the perpetrators of the crime.

The police chief warned individuals and groups behind the senseless attacks and mindless killings across the state to desist henceforth as they would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
