In a telegram to the bishop of Ondo, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said Pope Francis was “deeply saddened” by the “horrible attack” in Owo, his number two.

“All those who are affected by this unspeakable act of violence can be assured of his spiritual closeness,” the pope said.

On Sunday, suspected terrorists stormed the St Francis Catholic Church in Ondo State’s Owo Local Government Area, killing scores of worshippers and injuring others.

Nigerians, including President Muhammadu Buhari and many state governors, have condemned the incident that has plunged the country into mourning.
