The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has fixed October 5 for the conduct of local government elections in the state, releasing guidelines for the polls.
This comes as police occupy local government secretariats due to a leadership crisis, with caretaker committees in place after the expiration of elected chairmen and councillors’ tenure.
Outgone chairmen, loyal to Minister Nyesom Wike, protest the decision, insisting on a six-month tenure extension.
RSIEC met with political party leaders and stakeholders to conduct the elections, amidst the crisis.
