Spotify has announced the opening of Spotify Island, a digital area on Roblox that allows people to create music, play games, and engage with virtual artists, according to a press release. Despite its name, Spotify Island is more of a virtual archipelago, with players being able to jump between different interactive music-themed islands that rotate throughout the year.

Spotify refers to its digital island as a “audio sanctuary,” with distinct Spotify branding throughout, from the vivid green color of the environment to the heart-shaped “Like” icons placed throughout the island that users can collect and trade for virtual goods. The more hearts a player collects, the higher up the leaderboard he or she will rise.

Spotify Island grants players access to beat-making stations by Soundtrap, a Spotify-owned digital audio workstation that allows users to interact remotely, in addition to hidden Easter eggs across the island, one of which alters a player’s surrounding atmosphere from light to dark.

Spotify says it will add themed mini-quests, virtual meet-and-greets, and other exclusive material, such as paid products created by artists, to its digital area. According to The Verge, the entire share of earnings from artists’ products will go straight to the artists. It also intends to collaborate with musicians “in the months ahead” to “create more possibilities like this.” Spotify is beginning off its Roblox launch with K-Park, its first music-themed island, which will offer interactive experiences with K-pop stars Sunmi and Stray Kids and will celebrate all things K-pop.

Spotify’s integration with Roblox is a first for any music streaming service, and it’s part of a bigger push by the company to build a presence in what it calls the “metaverse,” a phrase that hasn’t been defined beyond a collection of virtual online locations.
