The Senate has approved a bill granting a 300 percent salary increase for federal and state judicial officers.

This follows the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno from Borno North at plenary.

Prior to this, an executive bill submitted by President Bola Tinubu, seeking to increase salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits for judicial officers and workers, was considered by the lawmakers.

Monguno explained that if the bill is also passed by the House of Representatives and signed into law by President Tinubu, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will have an annual salary of 64million naira, with the President of the Court of Appeal receiving 62.4million naira, while Justices of the Supreme Court will earn 61.4million naira each.

Also, Heads of various courts, such as the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, and the President of the National Industrial Court, will have a basic annual salary of 7.9million naira each.

He revealed that the increment has been included in the 2024 Appropriation Act.
