A female student at Lead British International School, Gwarimpa, Abuja, Namitra Bwala, has dragged the school before an FCT High Court for allegedly failing to protect her from bullies and subsequent cover-up of the incident.

A video had gone viral three weeks ago showing a female student Mariam Hassan, bullying Bwala, and this sparked outrage across social media platforms, prompting calls for accountability and justice by netizens.

The school management later issued a statement claiming it was investigating and taking all necessary steps to address the incident, while the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development also waded into the matter, after which Maryam tendered a public apology to the victim and Nigerians through a viral video message.

Bwala has, however, approached the FCT High Court through her guardian, Daniel Madu Bwala, suing for compensation, accusing the school of negligence and cover-up of the incident.

Namitra, in the court papers filed by Deji Adeyanju’s law firm, and signed by a founding partner of the firm, Marvin Omorogbe, on Monday, is seeking a total 505million naira in damages against the school for failing in its obligation to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for her.

The damages include 500 million naira damage against the school for failing in its duty to provide protection and care for her, as well as 5million naira cost of litigation and a public apology to be published in two national dailies.
