The Advisory Committee on implementing financial autonomy for Taraba State’s 16 local government areas has introduced an ambitious blueprint aimed at revolutionizing local government administration across Nigeria. The plan aspires to establish a model of efficiency and innovation that other states in the federation can emulate.

During a sensitization and interactive session held in Jalingo, Taraba State’s capital, the Committee’s Chairman, Rt. Hon. Peter Diah, emphasized the importance of this initiative. He outlined the committee’s commitment to ensuring that Taraba’s local governments become pioneers in achieving effective financial independence—a crucial step for accelerating grassroots development.

“Local government autonomy is a cornerstone of good governance,” Diah remarked. “It acknowledges the unique needs of our communities and empowers local leaders to make decisions that directly impact the lives of citizens.”

The blueprint focuses on boosting internal revenue generation, optimizing resource management, and enhancing community engagement. Rt. Hon. Diah stressed that by exercising their newfound financial powers responsibly and transparently, local government chairmen can usher in a new era of good governance.

He also highlighted the committee’s efforts to collaborate closely with local government officials, providing the necessary support and capacity-building to ensure the successful implementation of this autonomy.

“This is your moment,” Diah urged the local government leaders. “It’s an opportunity to redefine the role of local government and showcase the transformative power of decentralized decision-making.”

He encouraged the chairmen to work closely with traditional rulers and local communities, ensuring that resources and decisions align with the needs and aspirations of the people.

As the Advisory Committee works on establishing the framework for implementing the Supreme Court’s verdict on full financial autonomy for local governments, Diah called on all stakeholders to actively engage, provide insights, and collaborate for a seamless transition.
