The 465 street hawkers’ empowerment scheme, which was unveiled last week to provide each beneficiary with N50,000 is being investigated following allegations that some individuals attempted to exploit the programme for personal gains.
Last week, some video clips had gone viral, showing groups of youth who were reportedly not among the originally selected beneficiaries.
The individuals, who were allegedly brought to the venue by a third party, impersonating those on the official list, collected the 50,000naira grants, after which they were compelled to hand over 45,000naira each to the person who orchestrated their participation, leaving them with only 5,000naira.
The Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, confirmed this on Sunday, saying the commission’s efforts are not aimed at targeting specific individuals or groups but are part of broader efforts to investigate activities from both the past and current administrations.
He also called on the public to assist the commission with information that could enhance its investigations, while assuring informants of their confidentiality, urging them to continue supporting the commission’s anti-corruption efforts.
