President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a second five-year term for Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Marwa, first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, will now lead the agency until 2031, according to a statement by Presidential Adviser on Media, Bayo Onanuga. His return signals continued confidence in his reforms and anti-narcotics campaign.

The Adamawa-born retired officer previously chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse between 2018 and 2020. A former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, Marwa is an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy. Commissioned in 1973, his career included roles as Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, ADC to Lt-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, and Registrar of the NDA.

He later served in diplomatic defence postings in Washington, D.C., and at Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN. Marwa holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University.

Under his leadership, the NDLEA has recorded major drug seizures and arrested more than 73,000 traffickers and dealers, alongside a nationwide expansion of anti-drug education campaigns.

“Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse,” President Tinubu said. “I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs who are out to destroy our people, especially the young ones.”
