Alexandre Lacazette’s decisive actions propelled Lyon to a crucial 1-0 home win against Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday, creating a buffer between Lyon and the relegation zone. Lyon, previously in the bottom three, moved out after Metz’s 2-1 loss to Lorient.
The lone goal came in the 37th minute when Lacazette, amidst a tangle with Marseille’s Bamo Meite, skillfully redirected Ernest Nuamah’s low cross into the net while lying on his back. This marked Lacazette’s 10th Ligue 1 goal of the season.
Despite a double chance for Lacazette in the 43rd minute, hitting the post and forcing a save from Pau Lopez, Marseille couldn’t level. Lyon coach Pierre Sage noted the team’s fatigue in the second half but praised their defensive resilience.
In the second half, Marseille dominated possession but struggled against Lyon’s solid defense. The closest Marseille came to scoring was when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s attempt was cleared off the crossbar by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Lyon coach Sage acknowledged the physical difference in the first half and emphasized the importance of building on the victory. Marseille, now winless in four league games, faces challenges in the race for European places.
Meanwhile, in other Ligue 1 clashes, Nice and Brest played out a goalless draw, while Lille secured a convincing 4-0 win over Clermont. Lille’s Jonathan David scored twice, Benjamin Andre once, and Edon Zhegrova’s long-range strike completed the scoring. Monaco struggled, drawing 1-1 against Le Havre, and PSG maintained their lead with an eight-point advantage after a hard-fought 2-1 win against Strasbourg on Friday night.
