Real Madrid has confirmed that midfielder Jude Bellingham has suffered a high-grade sprain in his left ankle, ruling him out for up to three weeks. Bellingham, Madrid’s top goalscorer with 20 goals in 29 matches across all competitions, sustained the injury after scoring twice in a 4-0 victory over Girona in La Liga.
The England international will miss the Champions League last 16 clash against RB Leipzig on Tuesday. However, there is hope that he could recover in time for the second leg on March 6. Bellingham is also expected to miss several league matches, including encounters with Rayo Vallecano, Sevilla, and Valencia.
Real Madrid has faced injury challenges throughout the season, with Thibaut Courtois, David Alaba, and Eder Militao dealing with long-term absences. Key forward Vinicius Junior has also encountered various fitness issues. Despite the setbacks, Bellingham has been a crucial player for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, leading the La Liga goalscoring charts with 16 goals since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in the summer for 103 million euros ($111 million).
